74th Annual Juried Painting Show
Gallery Hours: 10am-3pm
Our 74th Annual Juried Painting Show will be on view at the Center from Sunday, April 9th to Sunday, May 7th, 2017. An opening reception and awards announcement took place on Sunday, April 9th from 2-4pm at the Cheltenham Center for the Arts.
Juror: Andrea Packard, Director of the List Gallery at Swarthmore College since 1995.
"It was a pleasure and honor to review the works submitted to the Cheltenham Center for the Arts' 74th Annual Juried Painting Show. I was impressed by the creativity, technical accomplishment, and verve evident in so many entries.
As an artist as well as a curator and juror, I am keenly aware of the subjectivity involved in making selections and want to stress that because of the great quantity of worthy submissions, it was not possible to include all the works that showed exceptional accomplishment or promise.
While making selections, I thought about how artists must identify and convey a clear idea, visual problem or theorem. When they do so convincingly, they prompt us to see the world in new and less conventional ways. I especially appreciated works that combined individuality, craftsmanship, and clarity of purpose. I gave greater emphasis to works that explore a fresh point of view, an unusual approach to image-making, or that express eccentric spirit. Because the range of talent far outstripped the number of prizes awarded, it is clear that the collective outpouring of creative inquiry is well-nourished here at the Cheltenham Center for the Arts. I'm grateful to Margaret Griffen for her leadership and the opportunity to be a part of this exhibition."
