Intro to Solarplate Etching

Summer 2018 / Printmaking

Solarplate etching is simple and produces exciting results. Solarplates are eco-friendly, light sensitized steel-backed polymer. They enable participants to reproduce photographic renderings or drawings through the use of a transparency, UV light and water. Both relief and intaglio printing may be experimented with during this workshop. This workshop will tackle several approaches to this non-toxic alternative printmaking technique. The process will culminate in pulling prints from a press. No experience necessary.

Additional material fee of $25 (paid to the instructor) for Solarplate (6 x 8), Solarplate test strips and transparency film.

Students must bring Printmaking paper (Examples: Rives BFK, Hahnemuhle Copperplate, Magnani Pescia, Somerset Velvet, Somerset Satin) newsprint and etching/ relief inks, (soy or oil-based inks).
