CHELTENHAM CENTER FOR THE ARTS SUMMER TEEN STUDIOS are specially designed for Teens aged 13-16, who enjoy activities in the visual ARTS. Our programs give teens the chance to develop creative skills for self-expression by focusing on a single subject at a time. We encourage teens to explore the many ways to solve problems and think outside the box. A carefully planned program provides teens with a varied schedule that maintains a high level of interest and fun.


Mixed Media Printmaking:


Teacher: Nicole Dul

Date: July 17-21

Time: 9:30am-12:30pm 

Tuition: $160 (Members: $150) 

Explore creative freedom and expression through experimental approaches to printmaking.  Discover new processes and techniques for creating paintings on paper using a variety of tools and materials.  Students are introduced to printmaking through collagraphs, monotype printing, screen-printing, and gelatinprintmaking.  They will learn tocreate texture, dimension and depth through layering and combining paint, ink, and paper ephemera.  Join us and dip into a range of artistic techniques including image transfer, stamping, stenciling, masking, collage and décollage.


Drawing to See:

Teacher: Santiago Galeas (Week 1)/Colleen Hammond (Week 2)

In order to draw well, students need to learn to “see” - edges, relationships, light and shadow, negative spaces and shapes. These skills will be honed through warm-up rituals and observation drawing.  Gesture drawing will be practiced to see holistically and draw expressively.  Color, though not always associated with drawing, will be introduced to capture excitement and atmosphere. Critical thinking and generating creative ideas will be learned and developed in group discussions and individual collections. Students will experiment with assorted drawing media and tools including graphite, conte, charcoal, ink, pens & brushes.


Clay Days!:

Teacher: Heather Ossandon

Date: July 10-21

Time: 1-4pm

Tuition: $325 (Members: $310)

Experiment with different forms in clay from slab construction to wheel throwing. Class includes working on surface techniques and understanding glazes.


The Fundamentals of Oil Painting:

Teacher: Colleen Hammond

Date: July 24-July 28

Time: 1-4pm

If you are new to painting or never picked up a brush The Fundamentals of Oil Painting is a class full of ideas, inspiration, information and instruction to guide you into experimenting and learning to paint with oils. Using a limited palette discover the versatility and sumptuous nature of oils. Come to understand the basic elements and principles of art, techniques and methods used to create a successful painting. Each class will focus on a different subject matter - still life, portrait, landscape, abstract and non-objective. Painting from life and photos will be utilized. Health & safety will be considered with all choices of materials, and a supply list made available upon request. 


Lost & Found: Assemblage with Found Objects:

Teacher: Nicole Dul

Date: July 24-28

Time: 9:30am-12:30pm

Tuition: $160 (Members: $150)

Create artistic artifacts by turning trash into treasured artworks. Discover new ways to imaginatively reuse found objects, scraps, cutouts and photos to make amazing assembled artworks. While learning the importance of recycling and sustainability, young people will get inspired to repurpose and create with wasted materials. Students will learn about artists such as Lee Bontecou and Robert Rauschenberg who transformed everyday objects in their artwork. They will turn a variety of otherwise wasted materials into multi-media sculptures and three-dimensional collages including decorated boxes called "Nichos” and steampunk assemblages centered around personal themes. 


Portrait Painting Intensive:

Teacher: Stephen Kennedy

Date: July 10-14

Time: 9:30am-4:15pm (includes 45 minute lunch break)

Tuition: $425 (Members: $410)

Back by popular demand! This course is designed for students who are interested in portrait painting.  The focus of this workshop is on getting the likeness of the model through well-constructed facial structures, value, and color relationship.  Students will work directly from the model each day. This course is designed for beginner to advanced students.  Materials list will be sent upon enrollment.
