Summer Teen Intensives/Classes

CHELTENHAM CENTER FOR THE ARTS SUMMER ARTS FOR TEENS are specially designed for teens ages 13-16, who enjoy activities in the visual arts. Our programs give teens the chance to develop creative skills for self-expression by focusing on a single subject at a time. We encourage teens to explore the many ways to solve problems and think outside the box. A carefully planned program provides teens with a varied schedule that maintains a high level of interest and fun.

2019 Summer Teen Intensives and Classes:

Classes

Watercolor Explorations:

  • Teacher: Julia Way Rix
  • Ages 13+
  • Thursdays, 6:30-8:30pm
  • Dates: 7/11 - 8/1
  • Tuition: $100 plus $30 materials fee paid to instructor

Dive into the wonders of watercolor painting. Explore the use of value, properties of paint, various mark making techniques and how to paint on-the-go. Previouis drawing experience recommended.

Teen Clay - Working in Multiples:
  • Teacher: Ellen Litwin
  • Ages 13+
  • Mondays, 6:30-9:30pm
  • Dates: 6/24-7/29 (6wks)
  • Tuition: $190 plus $25 clay fee per bag

Students will learn the basics of the potter's wheel and hand building and then go beyond to create sets of mugs, bowls and/or plates. Various glazing and decorating techniques will be offered to help each participant to create a body of work that will refelct their own individual vision. Previous experience is welcome but not required.

Beginning Figure Drawing:
  • Teacher: Katie Knoeringer
  • Ages 14+
  • Mondays, 6:30-9pm
  • Dates: 6/24-8/12 (8 wks)

Learn to capture the figure with accuracy and confidence in this introductory level class. Students work directly from the model, initially with gesture drawings done from short poses, building towards longer more detailed drawings. Formal issues such as proportion, scale, line, tone and light are discussed as they apply to understanding the human figure. This class features weekly demos of technique using pencil and charcoal. Students are required to purchase supplies for this class. A list will be provided.

Independent Study - Open Studio:

  • Wednesdays 4:30-6:30pm
  • Dates: 7/3-8/14
  • Tuition: $150

Time and space to work on projects you choose at your own pace! Building a portfolio? Completing summer assignments? Want some creative time to experiment with new materials? Instructor will be present to guide and advise as you explore your own ideas. We provide basic materials and space to store your ongoing work.


Intensives

Jewelry Making for Teens:
  • Teacher: Marthe Roberts-Shea
  • Ages 13+
  • Date: July 8-12
  • Time: 1-4pm
  • Tuition: $195 (Includes $35 materials fee to cover the cost of additional metals and gemstone)

Come join us for a fun and cool class. Make new friends or take the class with a buddy! During this five day workshop students will learn basic jewelry making skills. By the end of the week you can expect to come away with two pieces ogf jewelry. We'll start off by making a riveted bangle bracelet and then move on to a soldered and forged sterling silver ring with a bezel-set carbochon. *For the first project students should bring 2-3 empty, clean soda cans and 2 empty, clean 5oz tuna cans.

Big Beautiful Prints:
  • Teacher: Nicole Patrice Dul
  • Ages 13+
  • Date: July 15-19
  • Time: 1-4pm
  • Tuition: $170

Make big, bold artistic prints and explore creative expression through a variety of approaches to oversized printmaking with instructor, Nicole Patrice Dul. MFA. Create texture, dimension and depth through layering large collagraphs, monotypes, screen prints and block prints. In this week-long workshop, you will make your own designs, carve large wood/linoleum blocks, hand stencil silkscreens, paint on plexiglass, and make collaged plates to combine for dramatic jumbo prints. You will also enjoy a collaboration with peers on an oversized exquisite-corpse print. Participants will utilize Cheltenham print studio's facilities and large etching press. Young artists will complete a life-size, unique individual printed image and a collaborative exquisite corpse print bound to leave a lasting impression.

Drawing Composition and Design:

  • Ages 13+
  • Date: July 22-26
  • Time: 9:30am-12:30pm
  • Tuition: $160 (Materials list available at registration)

Learn to see and think about your work using composition, shape, color, perspective and texture to express your unique personal vision. Explore interesting materials as you create large and small works of art. This workshop will explore drawing with various media including charcoal, colored pencil, ink and wash, and mixed media techniques. Students will have the opportunity to work on observational as well as imaginative projects.

Oil Painting Exploration:
  • Teacher: Nicole Patrice Dul
  • Ages 13+
  • Date: July 29- August 2
  • Time: 1-4pm
  • Tuition: $160 (Materials list available at registration)

Discover the secrets of color and conquer oil painting techniques in the week-long intensive. Students will investigate a variety of materials, tools and techniques to become comfortable and gain confidence with the rich medium of oil paint. Explore sketching, composition, color theory, color mixing and paint application. Learn to apply a full range of value and tone to your paintings and enhance depth through techniques such as underpainting, grisaille or painting in shades of a neutral color, wet-on-wet or alla prima painting and glazing. With creative prompts, observational subjects and photographs students will create dynamic colorful compositions that they are passionate about!
