CHELTENHAM CENTER FOR THE ARTS SUMMER ARTS FOR TEENS are specially designed for teens ages 13-16, who enjoy activities in the visual arts. Our programs give teens the chance to develop creative skills for self-expression by focusing on a single subject at a time. We encourage teens to explore the many ways to solve problems and think outside the box. A carefully planned program provides teens with a varied schedule that maintains a high level of interest and fun.


2020 Summer Teen Intensives and Classes:


Getting Started with Graphic Design:

  • Teacher: Nicole Patrice Dul
  • Ages 13+
  • Mondays, 6:30-8:00pm
  • Dates: 7/6 - 7/27
  • Tuition: $110

Wonder why and how great design and illustration works are created? Through guided hands-on creative projects learn how to apply design elements and principles to communicate messages that make a strong visual impact. Participants will investigate the visual tools needed to develop smart graphic designs such as design composition, typography, color and image making with symbolism and metaphor. Through online presentations, Zoom instruction and hands-on projects students will learn graphic design fundamentals and work by hand to yield dynamic designs with personalized results.

Begin or further develop and select artworks for a strong creative portfolio with a range of art media in this online summer intensive. Refine your portfolio while advancing your unique artistic style and be inspired by the work of peers while participating in group Zoom critiques. The instructor will review artworks for portfolio use, guide students in the selection process, conduct group critiques and assign individual projects to improve portfolios.

Drawing People, Places and Things:

Learn the basic principles of drawing through the big three art genres: figure, landscape and still life. Through guided lessons and prompts, you will improve observational and technical drawing skills. Emphasis is on fundamental principles such as gesture, contour, value, form, proportion, perspective and composition. Release your creativity while developing a personal drawing style and enhancing your power to see. Tutorials, discussion and one-on-one feedback is given via Zoom conference. Supplemental material will be provided via links and e-mail when appropriate.

Gelatin Art Mini Journals:

Supplies available for curbside pick-up to be arranged on registration

Enhance your creativity with this exciting functional craft. Successfully add color, texture and design to paper through layering ink and paint on gelatin printing blocks. Use stencils, masks, stamps and texture tools for beautiful results. Follow along with the instructor on Zoom to make dynamic colorful journal covers and pages and learn to construct small sewn journals out of your creations.

Wheel Throwing for Teens Workshop: 2 SPOTS LEFT!

  • Wednesdays, 1-3pm
  • Dates: 3 weeks 8/12, 8/19, 8/26
  • Tuition: $75, includes clay and firing fee

This class teaches the basics of wheel throwing to form cylinders, bowls and vases using the potter’s wheel. We will explore decorative glaze techniques to enhance the finished surface. Beginners welcome. This class meets in-person. Students will be socially distanced. Equipment will be sanitized before and after each use. Students will sit at their own wheel. Face masks are mandatory!
