CHELTENHAM CENTER FOR THE ARTS SUMMER ARTS FOR TEENS are specially designed for teens ages 13-17, who enjoy activities in the visual arts. Our programs give teens the chance to develop creative skills for self-expression by focusing on a single subject at a time. We encourage teens to explore the many ways to solve problems and think outside the box. A carefully planned program provides teens with a varied schedule that maintains a high level of interest and fun.


2022 Summer Teen Intensives and Classes:

Classes - All classes have a maximum capacity of 10 students. Masks are required.

Teen Wheel Throwing Intensive: Choice of 1st week, 2nd week, or both weeks
  • Teacher: Devin Brown
  • Ages 13-17
  • Monday-Friday, 9:30am-12:30pm
  • Dates: Week 1: 7/18 - 7/22, Week 2: 7/25-7/29, OR 2 Weeks: 7/18-7/29
  • Tuition: 1 week, $160 or 2 weeks, $300

This class teaches the basics of wheel throwing to form cylinders, bowls and vases using the potter’s wheel.  We will explore decorative glaze techniques to enhance finished surfaces. Beginners welcome, no experience necessary. Masks and social distancing required.

Students may participate in one or both weeks.  Students who choose the 2-week option will have finished, glazed work to take home on the last day.  Students who choose one week only will have work to be fired and picked up after the last day of class.  

Creative Portraits

  • Teacher: Nicole Patrice Dul
  • Ages 13-17
  • Wednesdays, 1-4pm
  • Dates: 6/29-7/20
  • Tuition: $150 (materials included)

Students will create a large figurative portrait that tells a story of someone important to them. Modern and contemporary artists such as, Barkley Hendricks, Lauren Brevner, and Ketna Patel, among others depict a broad range of customs and cultures, reworked narratives and traditions in their artworks. Merging historical compositions and traditions with modern ideas, students will combine a variety of textures, vibrant colors, and dynamic patterns into a meaningful portrait. Students will learn basic figure drawing skills and apply them to an amazingly inspired painted portrait of someone they admire.

Fresh Color and Bold Compositions in Watercolor:

  • Ages 13-17
  • Monday-Friday, 4-6pm
  • Dates: 7/11-7/15 
  • Tuition: $160 (materials included)

Artists will enjoy learning and experimenting with creative watercolor techniques such as brush handling, wet into wet painting, dry brush painting, making textural effects, masking, and overlapping color. Students will be guided through watercolor exercises and art projects focusing on the use of color how to take advantage of the unexpected effects of watercolor. Students will be inspired by American abstract expressionists and color field painters. They will put their new knowledge of watercolor painting into practice creating artworks inspired by these Modern artists.

This drawing class, perfect for beginning or intermediate students,  focuses on acquiring and sharpening rendering skills.  Students will learn about various media and how to observe and apply what they see to paper.  From shadow and light, shape and contour, line work and perspective, together we will create work that mirrors our world.  Students will acquire observation and coordination, and concentration skills that may help them in many different fields of study.

Mosaics - Intensive: *REVISED TO 4 DAY INTENSIVE*

  • Tuition: $170 (materials included)

Mosaic art assists in the development of, spatial and visual organization (basics of geometry), fine motor skills, decision making, concentration, patience, problem solving, memory, logic, perception, imagination, creativity, intuition, responsibility, safety and more! Be introduced and inspired by ancient mosaics and contemporary mosaic artists.

Experience the basic technique of mosaic making using found materials, ceramic, and glass pieces to create your own beautiful artworks.

Big, Beautiful Prints:

  • Teacher: Nicole Patrice Dul
  • Ages 13-17
  • Wednesdays, 1-4pm
  • Dates: 7/27-8/17
  • Tuition: $160 (materials included)

Make big, bold artistic prints, and explore creative expression through a variety of approaches to oversized printmaking. Create texture, dimension, and depth through layering large collagraphs, monotypes, screen prints and block prints. Make your own designs, carve large wood blocks, hand stencil silkscreens, paint on plexiglass, and make collaged plates to combine for dramatic jumbo prints. You will also enjoy a collaboration with peers on an oversized group print. Participants will utilize Cheltenham print studio’s facilities and large etching press. Young artists create large scale dynamic prints that are bound to leave a lasting impression.
