2026 Summer Arts for Teens!
CHELTENHAM CENTER FOR THE ARTS SUMMER ARTS FOR TEENS are specially designed for teens ages 13-17, who enjoy activities in the visual arts. Our programs give teens the chance to develop creative skills for self-expression by focusing on a single subject at a time. We encourage teens to explore the many ways to solve problems and think outside the box. A carefully planned program provides teens with a varied schedule that maintains a high level of interest and fun.
2026 Summer Arts for Teens:
Drawing from Observation: Seeing like an Artist - 6 weeks
- Teacher: Nicole Patrice Dul
- Ages 13-17
- Mondays, 4:30-6:30pm

Develop strong foundational drawing skills while learning to truly observe the world around you. In this class, teens will draw from real objects, still lifes, natural forms, and classroom setups to build confidence in proportion, shading, and spatial awareness. Students will explore line quality, value, composition, and mark-making while working with graphite, charcoal, and ink. Emphasis is placed on slowing down, looking carefully, and translating observation into expressive, accurate drawings. Watercolor for Teens - 6 weeks

Explore the beauty of animals and the natural world through drawing and watercolor painting in this teen-focused studio class. Students will work from photographic references and observation to create expressive paintings of animals, plants, insects, shells, feathers, and other natural forms. Emphasis will be placed on sketching, color mixing, layering, and mark-making to capture texture, detail, and atmosphere. Teens will experiment with scale, creating both close-up studies and small and large compositions while learning how proportion, cropping, and composition impact visual storytelling. This class encourages careful observation, creative interpretation, and developing confidence in watercolor techniques while building a cohesive series of nature-inspired artworks. Teen Silkscreen Printing Studio - 6 weeks

Explore the exciting world of screen printing while creating bold prints on paper and fabric. In this hands-on class, teens will learn how to design images specifically for silkscreen, cut and paint stencils, and print layered compositions using water-based inks. Students will experiment with color overlays, transparency, and graphic repetition to produce striking prints. Emphasis is placed on design, process, and creative experimentation while learning safe and proper screen-printing techniques. Students will create a series of prints including posters, art prints, and optional fabric pieces such as tote bags or patches. Alcohol Ink Art Intensive: Painting and Monotype Prints, M-Th (1-week)

Explore the vibrant, fluid world of alcohol ink art in this teen intensive. Students will experiment with bold color on non-porous surfaces such as Yupo paper, plexiglass, acetate, foil and other specialty surfaces to create luminous abstract and representational imagery. Teens will learn how to control flow, layering, lifting, and blending techniques while also creating alcohol ink monotypes by transferring images from plates to paper on an Etching press. Additional exploration may include texture tools, stencils, stamping, and mixed media layering. By the end of the course, students will produce a collection of expressive alcohol ink paintings and one-of-a-kind monotype prints.
Miniature Art Studio - 4-day intensive

- Tuition: $150 (Students should bring to class - small watercolor journals (6” x 6”, 5" x 7" or similar recommended)
Work small to think big in this creative studio designed for teens. Students will create tiny paintings, miniature drawings, and small-scale mixed media artworks while exploring how composition, detail, and color shift on an intimate scale. Through guided exercises and individual projects, teens will learn how to simplify forms, refine brush control, and build strong compositions within a limited space. Projects may include miniature landscapes, small observational drawings, abstract color studies, tiny collages, and mixed media experiments. Emphasis will be placed on careful observation, thoughtful design, and layering techniques that allow small works to feel complete and visually impactful. Students will also explore working in series, creating collections of small artworks that relate through theme, color palette, or subject matter. This class encourages experimentation, attention to detail, and creative problem-solving while helping students develop confidence and precision in drawing and painting.
