CHELTENHAM CENTER FOR THE ARTS SUMMER ARTS FOR TEENS are specially designed for teens ages 13-17, who enjoy activities in the visual arts. Our programs give teens the chance to develop creative skills for self-expression by focusing on a single subject at a time. We encourage teens to explore the many ways to solve problems and think outside the box. A carefully planned program provides teens with a varied schedule that maintains a high level of interest and fun.


2021 Summer Teen Intensives and Classes:

Classes - All classes have a maximum capacity of 8 students. Masks are required.

Zines for Teens - 4 Weeks:

  • Teacher: Nicole Patrice Dul
  • Ages 13+
  • Mondays, 4-6pm
  • Dates: 7/26 - 8/16
  • Tuition: $105

Before blogs there were zines.  Get off the computer and create scrappy D.I.Y. booklets full of self-expression. Share your interests, opinions and passions in print through the art of self-published zine making. The instructor will introduce you to the history and culture of self-published zines from early fan publications to 1990s feminist punk movement zines to today’s popular zine uprising in teen culture. Students will then design and make their own fan or activist zines from start to finish.  Choose from a range of topics to focus your mini zines on including arts, crafts, design, literature, poetry, music, sports, food, fashion, culture, or go deep with politics, identity or social justice. Students will be familiarized with basic zine making supplies, layouts,  simple pamphlet folding and book binding techniques. You will have access to the instructor’s mixed media arsenal, and she will print out ten copies of each participant’s zine to be traded and disseminated among their peers.

 Art Journaling: Your World in Watercolor & Ink - 5 Weeks:

Frida Kahlo described herself as a child that “went about the world in colors.”

Through this class you will weave your own story much like Frida Kahlo did in her early watercolors and personal diary filled with colorful symbolism. With Frida as your inspiration, you will be guided through six weeks of creative art journaling lessons using watercolors and ink as your primary mediums. This class leads you through the creation of your own journal with a collaged cover inspired by your own ideas, imagery, personal symbolism and the works of Frida Kahlo. $15 materials fee can be paid via credit card (if clicked during registration) - or at first class by cash or check.

Portraits of Progress - 5 Weeks:

  • Thursdays, 9:30am-12:30pm
  • Dates: 7/1-7/29
  • Tuition: $175 plus $15 materials fee

Reaching through time and space, merging historical compositions and traditions with modern ideas, students will combine a variety of textures, vibrant colors and dynamic patterns into meaningful portraits of those the love and respect. Students will learn basic figure drawing skills and apply them to an amazingly inspired, life-size, painted figural portrait of someone they admire. The instructor will introduce contemporary figural artists for inspiration such as, Barkley Hendricks, Kehinde Wiley, Bisa Butler, Lauren Brevner, Amy Sherald, Ketna Patel, Wendy Red Star and Ben Pease among others who depict a broad range of customs and cultures, reworked narratives and traditions in their conceptualized modern artworks. $15 materials fee can be paid via credit card (if clicked during registration) - or at first class by cash or check.

Fabric Printing! - 5 Weeks:

  • Thursdays, 4-6pm

  • Tuition: $125 plus $10 materials fee

Learn to print your designs on fabric using  screen print, stencil, and block printing techniques.  Then, we will use the fabrics created to construct a functional work of art such as a bag, pillow or wall hanging. Beginners Welcome!

Workshops/Intensives - All workshops and intensives have a maximum capacity of 8 students. Masks are required.

Experiments in Encaustic Collaging - 2 Day Workshop:

  • Wednesdays, 1-4pm
  • Dates: 7/14 & 7/21
  • Tuition: $85 materials included

A two-fold class in the basics of encaustics in which participants will create a small work of art on wood and also venture into the world of printmaking by making and printing wax collagraphs on our etching press.  Using blocks of wood, photocopies or laser prints, beeswax and heat students will understand how to dive into the world of encaustics and make a truly personal work of art.  Students will enhance their works by embellishing  the beeswax with carving, scratching and impressing textures into the soft wax surface. They will continue the idea of collage with beeswax and apply it to printmaking by creating an encaustic collagraph.  Using matboard and a variety of materials for collaging such as fabric, strings, stencils, acrylic mediums, and leaves, participants will use encaustic principles to create a substrate to print. Once plates are completed they will be printed with Akua Intaglio Inks on our large press. Students will leave with a one-of-a-kind work of art on wood and an edition of prints.

 

Teen Clay Workshop - 2 Week Intensive: *Please note revised dates*

  • M, T, Th, 1-4pm
  • Dates: 7/19-7/29
  • Tuition: $190, plus $25 clay fee

Refine your pottery skills in this 2 week intensive for Teens ages 13 and up. We will work towards mastering basic forms on the pottery wheel which are the foundation for more challenging pieces.This class will include some hand building exercises as they apply to more complicated forms such as lidded jars, mugs and teapots. Prepare to have fun, be challenged and get messy! $25 clay fee can be paid via credit card (if clicked during registration) - or at first class by cash or check. *For advanced beginners and up*

Teen Hand Building Workshop - 2 Week Intensive: 

  • Teacher: Catherine Gacki-Hartt
  • Ages 13+
  • M, T, Th, 1-4pm
  • Dates: 7/26-8/5
  • Tuition: $190, plus $25 clay fee

In this two week workshop we will develop our hand building skills by constructing forms from slab, pinch pot and coils. Projects will include both functional and sculptural pieces. Beginners welcome! $25 clay fee can be paid via credit card (if clicked during registration) - or at first class by cash or check.
