Intaglio in Depth - New!

Spring II 2024 Classes / Printmaking

Intaglio in Depth is a deep dive into the wonderful world of etching! Students will learn everything required to prepare copper plates for etching with non-toxic materials. Safety procedures, studio chemistry, and solvent compatibility will be covered in depth. We will explore and demonstrate methods of etched mark-making beyond the drawn line including soft ground etching of found matter, spray paint aquatint with positive and negative resists, sugar-lift, and more. Handwork techniques including scraping/burnishing, using roulette tools, and electric rotary carving will be explored as well. Students will produce curious and engaging prints that prompt the question, “how did they do that?” and learn how to create identical and variable editions through paper preparation and printing techniques. Color printing via multi-plate registration, chine colle, a la poupee, hand-coloring and viscosity rolls will be explored.

Students must purchase one 4"x6" copper plate. Dick Blick or Artist & Craftsman, online or in store.
